About Bike Care Answers

Bike Care Answers is an independent UK guide for people who want to look after their own bike — and sort the squeak, the slipping chain or the flat before paying for a service or a pile of parts. We cover the problems riders actually search for: why brakes squeak and what stops it, why a chain skips or falls off, why gears will not change, how to fix a puncture, how to clean and lube a drivetrain without a workshop, and how to store a bike in a flat or shed without it rusting.

Search any of those and most answers come from someone selling something — a bike shop, a component maker, a lube brand or an insurer. Plenty of that advice is sound. Plenty of it also ends with a product you did not need, or a service booking for a job ten minutes and a rag would have solved. That is the gap this site exists to fill.

How We Work

We are not bike mechanics, and we do not claim to have personally tested every lube, tyre or part we write about. What we do is read manufacturers’ own guidance properly, check it against UK cycling-organisation advice, and look at what riders consistently report in real discussion threads. Where the evidence points one way, we say so. Where people genuinely disagree — is WD-40 fine on a chain, does a wax lube beat a wet one — we weigh it and tell you which way we would lean.

Our position, in one line: find the cause before you buy the part, keep lube off the brakes, and know where a mechanic starts. Most squeaks and slips come from dirt, wear or a small adjustment, not a new component.

What that looks like in practice:

  • The cheapest genuine check first, not the most expensive product
  • The mechanism in a sentence, so you can judge the advice for yourself
  • A plain note when a product or a seller’s advice is oversold
  • UK conditions — wet winters, grit, flats with no garage, UK prices
  • Honest about the limits — we tell you when it is a bike shop’s job

What We Won’t Do

  • No advice beyond cleaning, inspection, basic adjustment and puncture repair. We do not walk you through hydraulic brake bleeding, fork or headset work, carbon-component torque or e-bike battery and motor repair. Bikes are safety-critical and those are a mechanic’s jobs; we say so.
  • No invented tests. We do not publish “we tested 12 lubes” results or fabricated before-and-after comparisons.
  • No fabricated testimonials. We never invent personal-use stories, mechanic quotes or reader letters. Rider experience is attributed to where it came from.
